Top Six African Countries With the Largest Gay Population

The gay population has come a long way from being persecuted just for being around the world to being able to get married safely and peacefully in more than 20 countries. However, there is still a long way to go, especially in many countries where being gay is a serious crime, although the former does no harm to anyone except perhaps some people's feelings. 

 While the United States is known for defending human rights, we all know that it only upholds the rights of white men. All other population groups have faced discrimination over the past century, and many still do so despite improvements. In the 1950s, homosexuals were considered officially insane and were barred from working in the federal government. In 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City, a gay haven, sparking nationwide outrage and seen as a milestone in developing gay rights. The fight for LGBT rights continued, culminating in all 50 states that legalized gay marriage between 2004 and 2015. Yet even a decade ago, a celebrity's coming out was almost unheard of and often resulted in career suicide. It's a much more common sight, although much work remains.  As I mentioned before, in many countries, homosexuality is still illegal and even punishable by death. Most countries that strictly criminalize gays are Muslim, as Islam has always been against homosexuality. Even in countries where it's not a serious crime or even a crime, the stigma of gays still exists, so many people are still reluctant to come out. Most of these countries are represented in the 15 most dangerous countries for gay travellers.

 Since gay is a natural occurrence (regardless of what your religion says) unaffected by race, culture or other discriminatory factors, all countries should have a similar percentage of gay people. And legal pressures, many people refuse to admit it, even anonymously, and may even refuse to be more readily accepted.  3. Ivory Coast 

 While in Ivory Coast, gay acts are legal in private, public gay actions are not, and they can land you in jail for a decent amount of time. 

 4. Senegal 

We tell you that, surprisingly, Africa dominates the list of countries with the largest gay population. In Senegal, being gay is illegal throughout the country, and 97% of the population opposes it, at least publicly. He made it onto the list privately. 

 5. Ghana 

 The government itself has criticized Ghanaians who engage in gay relationships, and any gay person faces imprisonment for such acts. 

 6. Nigeria 

 Nigeria has one of the most restrictive anti-gay laws in the world, but in any case, this list is proof that suppressing something can never eradicate it. Many gays like you in Nigeria deserve a round of applause.
